In This World: Thunderbay!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetHi, I’m Stephanie Jung and I play Bijou in ‘In This World’. Thunder Bay!  What can I say about Thunder Bay?  Well, first of all, our high school audiences were fantastic.  It seems like everyone in Thunder Bay drives a pick-up truck.  It’s perfect because with our Roseneath truck, we fit right in.  A truck that I need a boost to get into because it’s so high.

Besides that….
well…oh WAIT.  They have the most delicious thing since…well…since delicious things were invented.  It’s called a Persian.  It’s a doughnut/cinnamon bun hybrid with a berry icing on top.  We didn’t know that these yummy baked good existed until our last day in Thunder Bay.  In fact, we had just started on the highway to Dryden when we decided to head back to Thunder Bay and taste a Persian at The Persian Man.  And now I’m obsessed with Persians.  But you can’t find them in Toronto so I’m sad.

Thunder Bay, thanks for being so awesome!

In This World: Sault Ste Marie!

Off we go!

Hey I’m Meghan and I play the role of Neyssa in In This World.

IMG_20140420_184942The bags are packed, snacks close by and mix cd’s are ready to get some serious playtime. We do have about 2102 km (thanks Google!) to cover over the next week after all. And of course this includes  the essential pit stops for washroom breaks, coffee, fast food, more coffee and even more washroom breaks – we have many hours of driving ahead of us.

Okay well… I’m not doing any of the driving – but I am a very enthusiastic navigator!

20140421_172830Our first overnight rest stop was Sault Ste Marie. We didn’t get to do much exploring, as it was Easter Sunday (everything was closed) and super foggy rainy. BUT we did get to enjoy a great meal together and take advantage of the pool / steam room! In the morning we packed back into the truck and kept on heading north passing through small towns like Wawa, White River, Marathon and Nipagon.

I have never travelled to Northern Ontario and I gotta say, so far it’s pretty beautiful…the frozen lakes, the Canadian Shield (thanks gr.8 geography!) the snow… Actually I’ve had enough snow.

On the second day of driving we run lines from the20140427_112246 show (as the young man at the gas station looks at us strangely) and stopped for lunch in this small town of White River, where we got an impromptu history of the town and learned that it is the home of Winnie the Pooh Bear!

Our first shows will be in Thunder Bay, and I’m really excited to share In This World with more audiences. I’m so lucky to be part of a fantastic team doing a show that reaches out to its audience and truly challenges them.

Next stop…

On The Road (‘In This World’) – Ottawa in under 24 hours!

My name is Stephanie Jung and I’m one of the two actors in In This World. Meghan Swaby is my co-actor and we’re joined by our stage manager extraordinaire, Melania Radelicki. We opened In This World in the beginning of April and have been touring to high schools in the GTA for the past couple of weeks. Now, we are ready to hit the road for some nights away from home.

Our first overnight trip for In This World was to Ottawa for just one night this past week. Did we decide to drive down the 401 to Ottawa? No, we decided to take the scenic route (also known as Highway 7/Trans-Canada) since we had to take a slight detour through Peterborough. It was one of the best decisions we made that day since we discovered a food truck on the side of the road photo3called ‘The Spud Box‘ in Kaladar. The Spud Box serves burgers, fries, poutine (with real cheese curds!), chicken fingers, and fish and chips and everything was made onsite….except for their hot dogs. They buy their hot dog wieners. True story – the cook (and owner? The truck seemed to be a family-run business) hated cooking them. Meghan ordered a hot dog and when the cashier yelled out the order, we could hear the cook whining about cooking it. Turns out the cook hates cooking hot dogs because they took too long and the wieners weren’t fresh like their burgers. We all laughed, fell in love with the cook and the cashier, and Meghan changed her order to a poutine. The food? Outstanding! Huge servings and filling…so filling that none of us really needed to eat dinner because we were still full from lunch. There isn’t much in Kaladar, but you should definitely make a stop for lunch at The Spud Box. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Ottawa itself was fantastic. There was the obligatory stop on Parliament Hill and the replenishing of maple syrup supplies (in liquid and butter form – yes! You read right! Maple butter! Deliciousness in a jar!) at Byward Market. The next morning, we performed our first out of town show at a high school in Richmond, Ontario. The high school was welcoming, helpful, and a great audience. A pretty awesome way to begin the out of town portion of our school tour.

Next stop? Thunder Bay! Confession: I’ve never been to Northern Ontario. I’m pretty excited.
